6 Vegan & Cruelty-Free Deodorants That Actually Work!
When it comes to all-natural & vegan deodorants, the biggest complaint I often hear is, “they just don’t work for me.” During my 9+ years as a vegan beauty blogger, I have tried a TON of deodorants, and truth be told, many of the natural, plant-based ones don’t work… at least, not for me. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, so something that keeps my stanky pits in check might make yours reek. This is just something to take into account.
Also, I’m a firm believer in detoxing your pits before transitioning to all-natural deodorants; it’s sort of like a reset button. You can read more about about that process here.
All right, now that we covered the basics, lemme share with you the deodorants that have been the most effective for me at keeping pit stank at bay.
6 Vegan & Cruelty-Free Deodorants That Actually Work!
1) Schmidt’s Deodorant, $8.99 (2 oz jar & 3.25 oz stick) – Schmidt’s comes in stick and cream form, and it contains super pure and highly effective ingredients. Available scents: Lavender + Sage, Bergamot + Lime, Cedarwood + Juniper (my fave), Ylang-Ylang + Calendula and Fragrance-Free. I have nothing but love for this Portland, OR-based company whose deodoro lasts All. Day. Long.
Ingredients: Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E)
2) Routine De-Odor Cream, $28 (50 ml) – Routine was created by sisters Neige and Pippa in Calgary, Canada. Their formulas are pretty perfect (sans the beeswaxy business in certain scents), and their packaging is super quirky and cute. Each jar last 3-6 months with regular use (shelf life is 12 months once opened), and 4 of their 12 scents are vegan: Sexy Sadie, Lucy in the Sky, Johnny’s Cash, Nelson in Nelson. I’ve only tried Sexy Sadie (thanks to Petit Vour), but it was pretty much love at first sniff. It uses natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents (coconut oil, what can’t you do?) in place of questionable deodorizing chemicals like aluminum zirconium, aluminum chlorohydrate and parabens.
Ingredients (Sexy Sadie): Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Kaolinite (kaolin Clay), Sodium Bicarbonate (baking Soda), Butyrospermum Parkii (shea) Butter, Theobroma Cacao (cocoa) Butter, Calendula Officinalis (marigold) Infused Olea Europaea (olive) Oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Cananga Odorata (ylang Ylang) Oil, Citrus Sinensis (sweet Orange) Oil, Pogostemon Cablin (patchouli) Oil, Azadirachtin Indica (neem) Oil, Nag Champa Oil, Cinnamonum Cassia (cinnamon) Oil, Vanilla Planifolia Oil
3) Lavanila Deodorant, $14 (2 oz) – I first discovered this deodorant at Sephora many moons ago, and being the vanilla freak that I am, I bought this with zero hesitation. It smells SO frickin’ good and it’s available in 11 vanilla varieties (Pure Vanilla is my all-time fave, though). It works at fighting odor and it makes you smell delicious – can’t beat that!
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Propanediol (Corn derived), Sodium stearate (Coconut derived), Zea mays (Corn) starch, Silica, Glycerin (Vegetable derived), Glyceryl laurate (Coconut and palm kernel oil derived), Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Moringa oil/hydrogenated moringa oil esters, Citrus medica limonum (Lemon peel oil), Inulin (Artichoke derived), Alpha-Glucan oligosaccharide (Sugar derived), Yeast beta glucan, Lonicera caprifolium (Honeysuckle) flower extract, Hydrastis canadensis (Goldenseal) extract, Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea tree) oil, Lycium barbarum fruit extract (Goji berry), Tocopheryl (Vitamin E) acetate, Sodium phytate (Rice derived), Sodium hydroxide (Salt derived).
4) Crystal Essence Mineral Roll-On Deodorant, $4.75 – I am especially obsessed with Crystal Essence Pomegranate (first discovered in Love Goodly’s Oct/Nov vegan lifestyle box), which is made with natural minerals salts and infused with actual pomegranate (such a unique, deodorant scent, no?). It smells AMAZE, it’s light feeling, and long-lasting. This is the most affordable deodorant of the bunch, too. 🙂
Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Potassium Alum (Natural Mineral Salts), Natural Fragrance made with essential oils and extracts, Cellulose (plant derived), Sodium Bicarbonate, Benzoic Acid (natural preservative), Zinc Gluconate (natural preservative)
5) Primal Pit Paste, $8.95 (2 oz) – Primal Pit Paste is an organic, all-natural deodorant that’s super creamy, easy to apply, and works so well – the baking soda neutralizes the bacteria that causes odor and organic arrowroot powder helps you feel dry while allowing you to still sweat and release toxins. Primal Pit Paste Light is recommend for first time users to allow their body to acclimate to the baking soda. Available scents include: Lavender, Thyme & Lemongrass, Jacked Up Jasmine, Patchouli, Royal & Rogue, Orange Creamsicle, Coconut Lime, and Unscented.
Ingredients: Organic Shea Butter, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Non-Aluminum Baking Soda, Organic Coconut Oil, Non-GMO Vitamin E derived 100% from Sunflowers
6) Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Cream, $14 – I have a special place in my ♥ for MMT. When my pits became sensitive to baking soda while preggo with babeh #2, their grapefruit baking soda-free formula saved me – seriously, it was the only deodorant I could use that didn’t cause rashes. To this day, I always keep a stash of this stuff in my bathroom just in case my pits decide to freak out on me again. MMT’s natural underarm cream, which has the consistency of cake batter, is safe, effective and gorgeous smelling.
